St. Francis Episcopal Church
St. Francis Episcopal Church A new complex for the parish features a 300-seat sanctuary, intimate chapel, parish hall, classrooms, music rehearsal, nursery and administrative suite. The physical change in location was quite dramatic as the complex provides the parish with substantially larger space and resources compared to the double-wide portable buildings used before.
The complex is designed to embrace the New Mexico climate. The entry courtyard embraces xeriscape landscaping, vistas of Sandia Mountains to the east across the Rio Grande valley, and a meditative prayer labyrinth. The sanctuary building uses earth berm construction to mitigate heating and cooling temperature fluctuations. The narthex and sanctuary are aligned with the main building entrance by a traditional Episcopal red door.
Desired to be a welcoming environment, the narthex, sanctuary and chapel were designed as warm inviting spaces through use of brick, stone, wood, and natural light. Abundant natural light cascades from clearstory and apse windows illuminating the main spaces while keeping side aisles in mysterious lower light levels. Custom designed liturgical furniture for the chancel and chapel allows the congregation to feel distinct and spiritual.
