Humphrey’s Highland Elementary School was once your history book four room school house on the open prairie. Now, it is in the middle of Amarillo and has had over 12 additions and renovations.
Originally built in 1927, Humphrey’s Highland now serves over 600 children. To support this growth, we worked with Amarillo ISD to add half of a city block to the campus while also working with the City of Amarillo to close a city street to make a contiguous campus. We added 30,000 sf of new classroom space, a new cafeteria/kitchen, and administration space. All existing classrooms were renovated, and the existing cafeteria/kitchen was renovated into new classrooms. Natural light within the common areas was enhanced with large clerestory windows. The existing library was expanded to meet state square footage standards.
This project was completed in multiple phases allowing the school to stay in operation throughout the construction process. The final result is a beautiful new campus that can serve over 700 students.
