The growing new sub-divisions on the southwest and southeast side of Amarillo have forced the Canyon Independent School District to build two new elementary schools. Each campus has an attached city park that flow into the courtyard without a break.
On the interior, the new schools are sized for 700 students. The student age groups are split with the older students on one side of the campus and the younger on the opposite side with shared spaces located in the center of the campus. Part of the Pre-K – 1st grade wing was designed to incorporate special needs functions in the future and they have their own playground, laundry facility, and easy access handicap accessible drop-off and entry point. Every classroom incorporates the latest technology including wireless internet and smart boards.
Being brand new campuses to the district, D/P/S took a comprehensive approach to the design by even designing the school mascots and choosing the school colors. These were incorporated throughout the schools including the exterior and interior signage and terrazzo floors. The Principal at each campus was provided a CD with mascot images for stationary, decals, apparel, and even the cover of the first school year book. Both schools utilize sustainable building techniques to minimize building material,life-cycle materials, and minimize energy and water usage making them the newest and most efficient schools in the Panhandle of Texas.
