New Mexico Junior College Workforce Training and Outreach Center

This addition to the New Mexico Junior College campus in Hobbs, New Mexico was designed within a collaborative environment with administration, student and community involvement.  The building houses the Junior College’s community training programs that vary from computer skills to large oil field machinery.  To retain flexibility, the building was designed with an under air and cable raised floor system, moveable partitions and the latest smart classroom technology.

The building exterior, while using brick in a contextual manner, also employs a material palette that is in keeping with the corporate identity of those who will use the facility.  The local Small Business Development Center - one of the building tenants - and has formed a symbiotic relationship with the Junior College due to this proximity.

Sustainable features of this building include the under air floor system and high performance glazing facing south and north as well as a large sun shade on the main corridor adjacent to the classroom spaces.  This sunshade provides architectural character while being functional as a sun and rain shade allowing better use of the courtyard.
