Clovis Lockwood Elementary School Replacement Project

The Lockwood Elementary School, located in Clovis, New Mexico was initially conceived as a renovation and new multi-classroom addition project in 2009. Since its inception in 1971, this single story elementary school would now undergo a massive renovation that would bring it into the 21st century. As the project proceeded it was soon realized however that in order to accomplish the task, the estimated costs involved would nearly eclipse the cost of building a new replacement facility. In 2010, after exhaustive design reviews and estimating alternatives, the project status was reclassified by the State of New Mexico to a new replacement school. With land donated to the Clovis School District for this new elementary school, the project is off and running.

Progress Update: 2.22.2011
The new Lockwood Elementary School was an agenda item on the February 22, 2011 School Board meeting. The architects presented an update to the School Board explaining the design process to date. Highlights included a review of possibly expanding the cafeteria, kitchen and gymnasium areas to handle a future 500 student population count (above the present designed 364 student core) that would match the Clovis Elementary Educational Specifications. Updates to the project schedule and costs were also presented. Click the below link to download the meeting’s handout for a look at the proposed site plan and floor plan of the new school.

Early Schematic Design Presentation to Teachers and Parents
On January 26, 2011, the Architects presented for discussion and audience participation the first conceptual drawings and 3D computer model imagery of the proposed New Elementary School for Clovis. These conceptual images known as “schematic drawings” provided the attending teachers, parents and school administrators a glimpse into the design direction that the project was taking. A site plan portrayed the building facing Oak Street with separate bus drop-off and parent drop-off areas. Most notable was the proposed building’s L-shape configuration that not only provided protection of the children’s playground from the harsh southwest winds, but created a simple but distinct separation of spaces for administration, classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria, media center, and other supporting functions. The presentation of the animated 3D computer model provided the audience with the first visual concept of how the new school could be massed and its exterior surfaces treated for textures, colors and materials.

Design Charrette
November 10, 2010 marked the day of a three hour design charrette that included school district officials, teachers, parents, and designers. The words that best describe this process were discussion, listening, and collaboration of the participants. The charrette process is a time where the designers have the opportunity to receive real world input from those that will actually be utilizing the facility, and the users have the opportunity to actually understand the process of building a new facility from the ground up.
